Unfold it and the Duo transforms into a device with a massive 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display — the largest display Apple has put inside an iPhone.

Apple describes the Duo as a passport-style device. Both displays use the same aspect ratio, helping apps and content move between the outer and inner screens without suddenly changing shape.

The idea is simple but ambitious: carry one device that can work like both an iPhone and a small tablet.

The Duo isn’t limited to being fully opened or completely closed. Apple designed it to work in several physical positions.

It can sit partly folded for hands-free video calls, stand on a surface for watching content, open flat for games and video, or display two apps side by side for multitasking.

iOS 27 adds software specifically designed around the new form factor, including a vertical Dock, orientation changes, split-screen layouts and a StandBy-style experience for clocks, widgets, photos and calendar information.

The 7.6-inch inner OLED display supports ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On functionality, True Tone and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness.

Apple has also given the inner display a nano-texture finish intended to reduce reflections, while the hinge is designed to minimize the appearance of the crease.

Open, the iPhone Duo measures around 5.2mm thick. Fold it shut and that increases to approximately 11.3mm.

The trade-off is weight. At around 254 grams, the Duo is heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro and even slightly heavier than the 249-gram Pro Max.

Apple uses grade 5 titanium for the frame and hinge cover, while the phone carries an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

Two finishes are available: Star White and Night Sky.

This is where the comparison gets interesting.

Despite costing substantially more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the Duo uses a dual-camera system rather than Apple’s full Pro triple-camera setup.

On the back are a 48MP Fusion Main camera and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The Main camera provides a 2x optical-quality option, while the Ultra Wide supports macro photography.

Video recording reaches 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120fps.

Apple does, however, use the folding design to introduce new camera experiences. Duo Preview can show the person being photographed a live preview on the outer display. Smart Take can wait until everyone in a group is ready, while Kid Cue uses animations to attract a child’s attention.

What you don’t get is equally important: the Duo lacks the Pro models’ dedicated telephoto camera, variable aperture, full Pro controls and Apple Reference Image feature.

If the Duo is about changing the shape of the iPhone, the iPhone 18 Pro is about pushing Apple’s traditional flagship camera further.

Its defining upgrade is a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. The aperture can move between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0.

A wider aperture can help capture more light in darker environments. Narrower settings provide greater control over depth of field and how much of the image remains in focus.

Apple has also moved the Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras to 48MP. The Telephoto camera provides 4x and 8x optical-quality options, creating a 16x optical-quality range across the complete system.

Pro users also gain manual-style controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and histogram display.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max support 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120fps, alongside ProRes, ProRes RAW workflows, Apple Log 2, Genlock and spatial video.

There’s also an 18MP Center Stage front camera capable of automatically reframing portrait and landscape compositions.

Another unusual addition is Apple Reference Image. The system signs photo data when an image is captured, allowing users to verify what the camera sensor originally recorded.

That makes the Pro lineup particularly focused on photographers and video creators who want more control over the final image.

Underneath the very different designs, the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and Duo share one important component: Apple’s A20 Pro chip.

The A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process and features a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and dual 16-core Neural Engines.

Apple says the Pro models have 50% more memory bandwidth than the previous A19 Pro generation, while GPU performance can be up to 40% faster in Apple’s testing.

Cooling has received attention too. The redesigned vapor chamber in the Pro models has three times the surface area of the previous generation, with Apple claiming up to a 40% improvement in sustained performance.

These improvements are likely to matter most during demanding gaming, professional video workflows and intensive on-device AI processing rather than basic messaging or browsing.

Apple’s new hardware arrives alongside iOS 27 and the latest Apple Intelligence features.

The new Siri AI, currently in beta, is designed to understand personal context and what’s happening on screen, answer broader questions and take actions across supported apps.

Apple continues to emphasize a mixture of on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute for AI workloads.

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback, while the larger Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours.

The Duo uses a different dual-battery architecture with cells distributed across both halves of the foldable phone.

Apple lists up to 31 hours of video playback using the Duo’s inner display and up to 44 hours using its outer display.

The Duo can reach 50% charge in around 20 minutes with a compatible 60W-or-higher wired charger and also supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, making it $700 more expensive than the entry-level iPhone 18 Pro Max.

These phones aren’t simply two versions of the same flagship.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max puts more emphasis on photography, professional video, battery life and the familiar iPhone experience. Its variable-aperture Main camera and dedicated Telephoto camera make it the more extensively equipped camera phone of the two.

The iPhone Duo spends its $1,999 starting price somewhere else: the foldable display and the experiences that come with it.

Its 7.6-inch inner screen provides considerably more working space for multitasking, media and supported split-screen apps, while the folding design enables hands-free positions and camera features that aren’t possible on a conventional iPhone.

Despite the name “iPhone 18 series,” Apple hasn’t released the entire family at once.
